“American Idiot” Premieres This Week

If you’re like me, you’ve been a fan of Green Day for quite some time, and even if you weren’t a huge fan, you at least knew who they were. And when the album “American Idiot” came out in 2004, you knew it was a good one. You didn’t even have to really like their previous stuff to find something on the new album that really hit home. Whether it was the title song or “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” the album really seemed to strike at the core of just about anyone. And for Michael Mayer, what struck him was inspiration. It was clearly a rock opera just waiting to hit the stage, and after a few years of inspiration and collaboration, it premiered at the Berkeley Reperatory Theatre back in 2009. But this year, it finally really hit the big times, as it made its way to Broadway. It’s going to be opening this week on Broadway with almost all of the same cast from the original production, and the clamoring from Green Day fans is almost impossible to ignore.

The previews from last week have been jam-packed for this one-act musical that features almost no dialogue, instead using the music to tell the story of the main character, “Jesus of Suburbia”, who is named Johnny in the musical, as he and his friends try to escape their suburban life in favor of something else. One of the friends never even makes it through the starting gates, and yet another finds himself going to war. Johnny himself finds drugs and a girlfriend, and he crashes hard.

It’s a great story, and it’s clearly been thought through a great deal by both Mayer and Armstrong, the lead of the band itself. “American Idiot”, the album, and the follow up to it, “21st Century Breakdown,” are the albums used to create a rock opera unlike most others, and it’s definitely worth seeing.

One Brick In the Wall For The Tour

If you grew up with parents who loved Pink Floyd like I did, or you were a fan yourself but never got to see the epic album “The Wall” while they were originally doing their tour, you can at least get a little bit of the experience all over again, as Roger Waters has announced the official tour dates for his 2010 to 2011 “The Wall” tour. This tour of North America will consist of 36 separate dates and will begin on September 15th in Vancouver, wrapping up in Anaheim on December 13th of 2011. You’re talking a full 16 month-long tour of an album from 1979 that was only performed 31 separate times. Pink Floyd had their ’80 to ’81 tour that was limited in London, New York, Los Angeles, and West Germany, and then in 1990 Waters held an all-star concert to commemorate ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

This isn’t the first time Waters has been running through the old repertoire, as it were. In 2007 and 2008, he was playing all of “The Dark Side of the Moon” for his concert (and I hear that album syncs up remarkably well with The Wizard of Oz, too. That would be a concert!) and now will take on “The Wall.” Eventually, it’s going to Europe after North America, but there are no details just yet on how that will happen. As for the concert itself, fans won’t be disappointed. The show will be modern and using all the best tech, with a wall 35 feet high and 240 feet wide that will be constructed and then torn down through the performance. There are expected to be a great deal of props and special effects, too. At 2 PM Eastern Time today, you can expect the website to have been relaunched with information on ticket sales, but I’m sure they’re gonna go fast.

Just how quickly do I think they’ll be out of tickets? Well, look at the album itself. You’re talking an album that spent 15 weeks on top of the charts and was 23 times platinum, as well as winning a Grammy. Mix that with some of the most haunting music and catchy lyrics (“We don’t need no education”) and you’ve got the recipe for a cultural phenomenon.

Whitney’s Respiratory Infection Sparks the Paparazzi

It seems like a year can’t go by without there being some mention of Whitney Houston and substance abuse, and it looks like April is the month for this year. On Wednesday, after being released from a hospital in Paris due to a serious respiratory infection, the press was right there to find out if Houston had been abusing all over again. Her response to the paparazzi? The claims were “ridiculous” and in fact, she feels fantastic and is ready for her tour. She wants to continue travelling and performing, and she certainly doesn’t appreciate the claims, it seems.

To be fair, though, there was real concern for her health when Tuesday she was forced to be hospitalized by doctor’s. The press was eager to jump on the bandwagon that this might somehow be related to Houston’s previous abuse problems, but so far, she’s done a great job of coming back. When she came back last year with the album “I Look To You,” she had fought and conquered that addiction and after seven years of no studio work, she was out and out there with a vengeance.

But, whether or not she’s really stayed clean is the issue. She was given poor reviews during her tour while it was in Australia, as fans claimed she not only looked poorly, but sang off-key and seemed to be out of breath. Houston claims it’s allergies for this time of year, and she swears she doesn’t even read the tabloids or look at them, because she’s confident that she is truthfully clean and wants to be back in the spotlight. Let’s hope she’s telling the truth! If she isn’t, she might find herself in a worse position if she’s hospitalized again. Or, of course, she might just be having some bad international allergies.

An Incredible Steampunk Machine

Who doesn’t love Steampunk? The unusual but exciting take of Victorian technology far past its actual development, such as analog computers and an intellectual development that surpassed the technology, has been a branch of science fiction that audiences have loved for quite some time. We should have known that bands would eventually start to be inspired by it. And one of those bands is “Sugarland,” a country duo that has already won Grammies in their career, and are currently in the studio finishing up what will be their fourth album, and they’ve so far given it the title of “The Incredible Machine.” The vocalist of the group, Jennifer Nettles, has been enthusiastically hopeful about the album and while there isn’t a release date just yet, they’ve got quite a plan for it. With around 10 tracks, all of which are newly written from in between their albums, Nettles has been speaking a great deal about the new changes and growth that will show in the album.

From the lyrics to the vocal work, Sugarland is really hoping to show growth and change from their last album, “Love on the Inside.” To do that, they have considered the steampunk movement as a way to facilitate their growth, and it’s going to be a major theme throughout all of their work on the album. From the song to the tour to album artwork, Sugarland’s foray into steampunk will be complete. Interestingly, the way that Nettles is describing the new vocals isn’t necessarily what I would call steampunk, though. Given that she’s describing herself as a mix of Blondie and Chrissie Hynde, it sounds like this will be a very interesting album that won’t quite be like anything we’ve heard out of Sugarland before. Whether or not that’s necessarily a GOOD thing remains to be seen.

South By Southwest Comes to A Close

Austin, Texas was the home of one of the most important and influential music festivals in the United States this weekend, and South By South West was an amazing experience. Even though it was rainy, cold and windy on Saturday as it came to the end of the concert, the fans didn’t really seem to care. On Thursday, March 18th, the famous Motown legend himself Smokey Robinson had been there to deliver the keynote speech and start the festival right. The crowd seemed to be a little restless the first night but as the Conference went on, the crowd and the performers only got more and more enthused.

Over the conference, several different performers were there to really bring some amazing talent and enjoyment to the concert. It was really the second day of the confererence where the fans were given the real performances, and you could see the lights go from red to green on Friday. Sadly, Alex Chilton, famous guitarist of Big Star, had passed away on Wednesday, so there were touching remembrances throughout the performance, and many of the musicians there felt a little numb by the loss. But, the audience wouldn’t let the tragedy stop the celebration of music. They were there in throngs for Stone Temple Pilots, who were finally performing together for a new album, something they hadn’t done in almost a decade. Robbie Krieger also arrived to promote a new documentary on the Doors. Cheap Trick also got to help the audience rock on.

Muse, Courtney Love, and Smokey Robinson himself were all different performers helping to keep the crowd all sorts of riled up during the concert on Friday. To bring it to a close on Saturday was Estelle and Snoop Dogg, and most touching, a full Alex Chilton tribute really brought the night to a final close.

Lil Wayne Gets ANOTHER Magic Trial Postponement

Okay, okay, seriously? Wait… SERIOUSLY? First it’s the dental work that he needed so terribly badly that he couldn’t go to trial until it was taken care of. Then, it was a courthouse fire that took place yesterday that made it impossible for him to have his sentencing done then. I understand that there was a fire and that that isn’t exactly an easy or quick fix, but putting all that aside… the guy’s then able to go and perform at the Jay-Z concert last night in New York. I am aware that we have due process and that he is not in custody and that means he should be allowed to about as if he is doing business as usual. In this case, it meant being at Jay-Z’s “Blueprint 3″ tour, while Young Jeezy had a set during the performance. BUT. If he had gone to his sentencing the last TWO times, he would be currently serving a very real sentence for a very, very real crime.

That being said, the performance was just as much of a surprise for the concert-goers as well. Jeezy and Jay-Z had performed a collaboration “Real As It Gets” onstage, then Jay-Z said he was leaving Jeezy to a solo performance. After leaving the stage, Jeezy performed a couple of verses on his own before ushering in the surprise guest of Lil Wayne. And that surprise performance was one that completely set the audience on fire, as it were. The number didn’t just have Lil Wayne, either. It also featured Nicki Minaj and Drake, and “I’m Goin’ In” wound up being one of the major highlights of the night.

Of course, when it came to an end and Wayne left, Jeezy made sure to give him his “we’re with you 100 percent” vote before they left. And not to sound cynical or like an old fogey, which I’m not, but doesn’t SOMETHING seem off about letting someone whose new sentencing date is Monday, March 8th, be allowed to go pop into a concert when he’s supposed to be preparing for a sentence?

Ahhh, entertainment industry, how you love to treat your stars.

Ready for Camp Bisco and Planet Anthem?

I don’t know about you, but I can’t NOT love a band with the name Disco Biscuits. This awesome electro-jam group have been quite popular for their fun sound and have had quite a following for some time. And they have finally given the dates for one of their more unique features as a band, their Camp Bisco, an arts and music festival that spans three days. Camp Bisco 9 will be taking place from July 15th to July 17th in Mariaville, NY, at the Indian Lookout Country Club. And it’s going to be an awesome time, as Disco Biscuits will headlining each night of the performances, and there are scheduled to be over fifty other acts throughout the festival.

Curious about the kind acts you might be seeing at Camp Bisco this year? Well, while the performances aren’t set in stone, some of the former performers were DJ Shadow, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Kid Cudi, and Damian Marley, just to name a few. And the camp isn’t just popular, it’s also been praised as a new kind of business model for when artists want to own and host their own live events.

To top all the good news off, Disco Biscuits will also be releasing their fifth album this March, on the 16th, entitled “Planet Anthem.” Given that the band has a new deal now with Warner Music’s Independent Label Group, you’ll see it distributed with them and also released by Diamond Riggs REcords. If you’re curious about what the album will sound like, then go ahead and look for the EPs “Widgets” and “On Time.” The EPs both offered different tracks from the new album, as well as giving different remixes so that their fans could get a chance to hear what was coming and weigh in on what the new album would be.

$57 Million Bucks Raised In The Epic Hope For Haiti Concert

Did you tune in on Friday to the Hope For Haiti telethon and benefit concert? If you didn’t, then you missed one heck of a show. Not only did the insane event riase over $57 million in the name of the cause, but there were some absolutely mind-blowing performances by several different actors and musicians that stunned everyone. The Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Lisa Paulsen, the CEO and president, happily reported the absolutely staggering amount of money that people were able to donate for Haiti. In fact, a new standard had been set by those who donated.

Every major network, as well as a huge variety of major channels aired the telethon that spanned two hours and featured quite a few stars. Also, if you didn’t see it on TV, you could have watched it as a live stream online, and there were several opportunities to call in and donate what you could. From PBS, Bravo and MTV to ABC, NBC and CBS, the world watched the Hope For Haiti telethon and poured out their good will to the people of Haiti. Of the performers, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead and Beyonce, as well as many others, dazzled and used their influence and presence to help inspire good will from the public. The earthquake in Haiti has been estimated to have taken the lives of 200,000 people, and all the relief possible will matter in the weeks and months to come.

Even after the telethon itself, the people behind the telethon have decided to make the actual performance available as both a CD and on iTunes. The proceeds will go right to Haiti relief, and whatever help is possible is needed right now. New Year’s Eve Was Live and Wild

One of the best and most thrilling parts of ringing in the New Year is the multitude of major bands front-lining and performing at venues all over the world. After all, we all love to party, and the best way to do that is with the hottest voices and musicians all over. So, 2010 was rung in wonderfully, but I’m sure you’re wondering by who. Well, Billboard had their own Fox live show, on top of the normal line-ups by all sorts of networks, so let’s take a look.

Allison Iraheta was one of the best acts of the night with her stunning performance and her kick-ass and take names later attitude. She was part of the Billboard performance on Fox, but she certainly wasn’t the only performances out there making people rock.  During Dick Clark’s New Year’s Bash done every year, the Black Eyed Peas made one of their best performances with “Imma Be” off of their album, The E.N.D., and had people rocking and rolling while they waited for the ball to drop.

Also, not to let her newfound confidence and “General badassery” go by the wayside, Rihanna was a frontliner on NBC’s New Years Eve celebration hosted by Carson Daly. Wearing a white coat and a black stylish top hat, she was rocking along and bringing in the New Year with everyone else, performing “Hard”.

Jennifer Lopez looking fantastically hot in a black outfit that seemed a unique combination of nude bodysuit and sheer black, showing that she was more than prepared to make a celebration happen. Green Day was another front-liner for the night, but one of their best performances was knowing that they made their way to the end of the night, ushering in the New Year with “21 Guns,” the perfect wind-down to a fantastic night.

The Fame Monster That Is Lady Gaga

With the release of Lady Gaga’s newest 8 track album, “The Fame Monster,” featuring her newest single “Bad Romance,” it’s time to take a look at the Haus of GaGa and try to figure out just why everyone loves the blonde bombshell who likes to thank “God and the gays.” For many, it’s a combination of her theatricality and her music.

For the same reasons that so many people love Marilyn Manson and the Dresden Dolls, the people have cried out that they love Lady Gaga, and so she has brought them a new album. Lady Gaga’s theatrical nature and bizarre videos and live performances have managed to completely capture the public eye. In the newest video, “Bad Romance,” Lady Gaga’s choreography was grotesque and reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, while also bringing incredibly vivid imagery. That might be what makes people like her so much, the fact that she can utilize this imagery and seems to be feeding the desire of the youth demographic to have hard, blood-pumping pop music.

But just like Lady Gaga’s previous album, “The Fame,” the new one doesn’t necessarily follow one simple formula. Another notable song from “The Fame Monster” is “Speechless,” written for her father and showcasing another side of Lady Gaga’s personality.

Thematically, just as “The Fame” dealt with the demons and obstacles faced in the quest for fame, “The Fame Monster” details the pitfalls of having become famous. The music is just as blood-thumping techno as the last album, and utilizes innovative lyrics to really sell the theme. Just take a look at “Bad Romance,” where Lady Gaga references and was utilizing a great deal of imagery from Alfred Hitchcock movies.

Overall, “The Fame Monster” has lived up to all the hype it was given before the release, if not more and is worth the purchase just for “Bad Romance” and “Speechless.” Another hit album from Lady Gaga proves she isn’t planning on being just another flash in the pan.
